17 Sustainable Development Goals - No. 9 "INNOVATION, INDUSTRY, INFRASTRUCTURE"

How do we implement Goal No. 9 "INNOVATION, INDUSTRY, INFRASTRUCTURE"?

Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

In many countries, investing in infrastructure - transport, irrigation, energy, and ICT - is essential for achieving sustainable development and empowering entire societies. For a long time we have known that growth in productivity and income, improved healthcare and better education depend on investment in infrastructure.

Manufacturing industry is an important driver for the economic development and employment. Currently however, value added per capita is only USD 100 in LDCs compared to over USD 4,500 in Europe and North America. While over the past decade carbon dioxide emissions from manufacturing processes have decreased in many countries, the rate of decline is not the same worldwide.

Technological progress, including increasing material and energy efficiency, is at the heart of efforts to achieve environmental goals. Greater investments in highly advanced technologies are necessary to increase the efficiency of in-house production. (source: UN)

Development, updating and monitoring of the implementation of the "Local Revitalization Program for the City of Katowice in 2016-2022"

In 2016-2022, we allocated PLN 2.2 billion for revitalization in Katowice. Currently, there are 138 projects, 80 of which are urban projects and 58 were submitted by external institutions.

In our perception, revitalization is an action in many areas - from social, to specific groups of Katowice residents (e.g. seniors), through the construction of new roads and bicycle paths, the purchase of school equipment, to the adaptation of post-industrial areas and buildings for culture, education and science. The goal is multidimensional and achieved by various means, and it is about social and economic revival of areas that need changes for the better.

Municipal Management System - Katowice Spatial Information Infrastructure (MSZ-KIIP)

MSZ-KIIP is an advanced system of information placed on the map of our city.

It is estimated that as much as 80-90% of the information used in public administration relates to space and can be located on a map, e.g. based on an address, geographic coordinates or a land reference number. Thanks to the data collected in the MSZ-KIIP system in the form of thematic layers (such as: plots, buildings, roads, spatial development plans, address points, etc.), it is possible to analyze information about a given area in an interdisciplinary manner at various decision-making levels, as well as create visualizations in the form of digital maps. The map placed on the Internet allows convenient access to selected information for each resident.

In 2019, 167,207 entries to the MSZ-KIIP system were recorded from the outside, while in the first half of 2020 there were 87,446 entries.

More information … is an application thanks to which residents can easily indicate faults in the city, from a damaged bench, to a dump or pseudo-graffiti. Out of over 14,500 reported problems, we have already repaired over 10,000 (in two years), but no less important here is the ability to track or comment on reported issues and propose solutions, as well as direct contact between residents and officials. In this case, innovation concerns not only the use of an innovative tool, but the formula of cooperation and communication with residents. Importantly, it is used mainly by residents of the most degraded districts, having equal access to the services of municipal services and easier contact with them (via e-mail, application, telephone). The application has gained a reputation as an effective tool.

Partnership in the NOSPR AI project

The cooperation of the City and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) under this project consisted in creating the world's first artificial intelligence with which you can talk about classical music. Users of the solution can listen to excerpts from NOSPR recordings and ask about everything they would like to learn from musicians and composers. The aim of the project was to create an innovative tool for music education, available at the national level. The project is the result of cooperation between NOSPR, IBM, Fujitsu Technology Solutions, ING Bank Śląski SA, GAZ-SYSTEM and students and teachers of the Technical School Complex No. 2 in Katowice (Zespół Szkół Technicznych i Ogólnokształcących nr 2) and the Silesian Technical Research Institutes in Katowice (Śląskie Techniczne Zakłady Naukowe w Katowicach), who support the project as part of the educational and professional program P-TECH, as well as representatives of the Complex of Technical and General Schools No. 3 in Chorzów (Zespół Szkół Technicznych i Ogólnokształcących nr 3) and the 1st High School in Mikołów (I Liceum Ogólnokształcące). The Katowice City Hall has joined this group.
